Woodruff Man Recieves 30 Years for Fatal Shooting
April 18, 2012
A Woodruff man received a 30-year prison sentence today after he accepted responsibility for a fatal shooting and a second shooting that left a person with a life-threatening injury. Jesse Goggins, 58, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder for the April 16, 2011 shooting that claimed the life of Carolyn W. Rangel, 39, of Woodruff and injured Tony Jones, 42, of Woodruff. The victims were shot inside of an Irby Street apartment home. Investigators spoke with victime witnesses at the scene who reported the violence erupted out of an altercation between Goggins, Tony Jones and Jones’ brother. Goggins retrieved a gun from his apartment and shot Tony Jones in the stomach. He then went inside Jones’ nearby home and shot Rangel twice. Investigators recovered the gun inside of an empty beer box inside Goggins’ apartment. Goggins did not have a prior criminal record. He will serve every day of Circuit Judge Derham Cole’s prison sentence before he is eligible for release. “Jesse Goggins will likely spend the balance of his life behind bars,” Assistant Solicitor Timi Poulos said. “I’m pleased we were able to resolve this case without exposing the victims to the stress of a trial.”
