Historic Price House (Price's Post Office)

A National Register landmark near Woodruff: a c. 1795 brick house that was a store, post office, tavern and inn. Now a museum of the Spartanburg County Historical Association, currently closed for renovations.

Thomas and Anne Price built this 2½-story brick house around 1795, just northeast of today's Woodruff. Its gambrel roof and Flemish-bond brick walls were unusual for the Upcountry. The Prices ran a general store, a post office (Price's P.O.), a tavern and an inn here. Stagecoach travelers slept in the rooms under the roof.

The work was done largely by enslaved African Americans. When Thomas Price died in 1820, he enslaved twenty-four people. The museum shows a typical Upcountry slave cabin; it is not original to the site and was moved here to help tell their story.

The Spartanburg County Historical Association owns and operates the house as a museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. The house is currently closed to the public for renovations. Check the Historical Association's page before you visit.
